Magnetofunky No. 100. It's Friday, November 30th, 2018.

[intro theme]

Hey. Larry here. This week the headaches come from the Mfunky Labs drawing board, and not from breathing the Camp Fire air. Meanwhile, the music is all curated from Reverbnation under the theme of 100 is just a number...

[song] - 00:46

Ok, that was 100 Pieces - urban jack, a Pop / Indie / Electronic artist up in Portland, OR, with no bio, no other links, no way to know if this is an old upload or brand new, and what difference does that make?

Anyway...

This is a laid back (and often explicit - you bet your ass) weekly international podzine of extremely eclectic music and progressive politics, with a focus on energy independence for the 99%. My podpages are 1223studios.com/mfunky.h and facebook.com/1223Studios.

[Grid Theory] - 05:07

Circuit Diagram Weeds

Ok, In Grid Theory,

I expected to be deep in the weeds of circuit design for the booster box but toubleshooting the Benitez-1 build took more time, and I'll get to that later.

For the booster, there's already a schematic diagram that came with the video by Ludic Science, so, not exactly starting from scratch, but I'm adding an on-off switch for the battery side, and the output from the transformer side needs to route through a DPDT switch to select either the AC or DC outlet, of which I found no comparable examples to crib from - this is where a decent engineering spotter would be handy, but I've kinda given up on that cause I got no responses to past entreaties (and don't get me started on Reddit; apparently the words 'Bedini Motor' are the kiss of death to the engineers over there, and way too many trolls over there in general).

Anyway, I at least had to give up on putting LEDs on the selector switch, but I can put one (along with a resistor) on the power switch. The last kink deals with the AC. I'm using a 3 prong self grounding outlet, but I'm still unsure about how and whether to make it an isolated ground inside this non-metallic box. That's the patch of weeds I'm in presently, and before I start cutting and gluing the ABS plastic that's the hump to surmount. I've thought about asking Siri or Alexa, but then an AI, after all, is only as good as the asshole who programs it, as demonstrated by the recent examples of AIs exhibiting the supposedly unconscious bias of their creators--

[bell]

Uh, anyway, coming back with more Benitez fun...

[Back To The Stage] - 07:55

Ok, Back to The Stage, continuing the theme with a few alternate takes on the number, starting with

100 White Lies - Brandon Varsity, a Pop / R&B artist active in Denver, CO / NYC, AKA Ray Elle, who performed in the musical Godspell as the youngest cast member by far, and released five mixtapes, two full length albums, and multiple singles. Every song is available for purchase or streaming on all Major Streaming platforms. Cool.

Next up an instrumental - 100 Days - Roby Mackie a rock guitarist out of Clydebank, UK. His influences range from Brian May to Joe Satriani, Dave Gilmour, Adrian smith and Adam jones thrown in for good measure. Slowly seeing the world on a limited basis.

And we wrap the short set with In 100 years All New People - AMPAGE, California based hard rockers down in Point Arena, who's successful professional career spans from the mid 1980's until present, with a bio full of name-drops. Check out their Greatest Hits 2007 CD, "Future Days Gone by."

["Geeknotes"] - 20:01

Geeknotes: 12/02 - Howard Zinn Book Fair - Fighting for the air we breathe, CCSF Mission Campus, 12/06 - 100 under 100 Group Art Show - 4th Annual @ Fleet Wood SF, 12/06 - Corazón del Tiempo Film Screening for Zapatista Middle Schools @ Omni Commons, Oakland, 12/07 - Tech Done Right Demo Night, Oakland Museum of California

Hey, Geeknotes!

Today it's Friday the last day of November,

And the blue wave is almost done with a final count of 40, maybe 41, so call it a blue tsunami. Meanwhile the lying resident is in full Pres. Fredo Corleone mode, with Paul Manafort exposed as a hamfisted mole in the Mueller operation, and Cohen's precision flipping made him run screaming from the Xmas tree lighting ceremony. And maybe the tear-gassing of refugees at the border was nothing more than entertainment for the dejected red-hat freaks glued to the Nazi Channel who needed a pick-me-up. And we can all say out loud finally 'it's the beginning of the end,' unless you're a federal employee. Tick tock mofo...

Meanwhile, the NWRA should just admit that they don't give a goddamn about a good black with a gun, and the po-lice should admit that their oldest duty is and has always been to shoot nigras, whether they're armed or not. Meanwhile, what the hell is Chuck Shumer's problem? And no, I don't have to be more specific, but let's just leave it there, for now and run some dates:

12/01 - World AIDS Day 2018

12/02 - World Day For Slavery Abolition

12/02 - Fighting for the air we breathe, 10 AM – 6 PM, City College of San Francisco Mission Campus, 1125 Valencia Street, SF

Happening during The 2018 Howard Zinn Book Fair. It's the theme for the 5th annual Book Fair.

It is no secret that wildfires like the Camp Fire are becoming more frequent and more severe as a result of climate change. Crumbling infrastructure, dwindling public services, and spiraling inequality heighten the impacts of environmental catastrophe, while public officials scramble to ensure a profitable future for the companies behind climate disasters. But everyday organizers, activists, researchers, and writers are working towards a different path. So stop in to catch this series of sessions highlighting bottom-up accounts on the climate crisis and struggles for environmental justice.

[Grid Practice] - 26:43

Benitez Build Edits

Ok, in Grid Practice...

Picking up after I finally cut the housing off the motor, because the little rubber thing you screw off clockwise was jammed. Anyway, the AC universal motor from the smoothie maker is just a touch smaller than the blender motor, but it still fits on the pvc mount. Anyway, this motor takes AC and DC input, so I just had to clip it to the 12V 4Ahr battery and it kicked right on. I put a 30 sec. video of it on the FB page, along with this interesting video showing a guy had apparently cut the armature wires off the field coils, reconnected them at the other end I'm guessing and now had both the coil wires and the armature as input in series. I didn't have to do any of that, but in the weeds I found that if the universal motor isn't series wound but the armature and field coils are in parallel, that's called a universal shunt motor, but those are old school motors, and since a series connection delivers more power, I could see taking an old shunt motor and modifying it, but I don't have to...

Anyway, with the motor mounted, I lucked out at the local hardware store; they had neodymium disc magnets (3 of 'em for $10), so a bit of super glue and hot glue on the pulley wheel, I was ready to test. Hooked everything up, set the 4 knife switches, then the on-off single switch, and zilch. after 10 minutes of checking all the connections again and nothing, I disconnected the motor, checked it directly with one of the batteries, OK, then I connected the power wire to the motor and started testing the ground wire against different ground connections on switch no. 2.

It turned out the block was right where that third diode completes the common ground, but that only makes sense if the diode is backwards, but that ain't the way it's drawn in the diagram, and I didn't find anything under circuit diagram design about flipping the diode symbol when you go around two corners...

Anyway, I redid the third diode and flipped it, hooked everything up again, and this time the motor kicked in when I hit switch no. 4, with the on-off switch off. It took a minute but I moved the switch from the circuit to the motor ground wire, in between it and the common ground. Next...

I put up a proof of concept video showing everything 5 by 5, but before I start running Coefficient of Performance tests, I need to prep the batteries (fully charge the A's and discharge the B's), then fix up a quick bypass line for the ammeter (cause it'll throw off the results if you leave it connected for hours).

Meanwhile, I finally got around to ordering more 30 gauge magnet wire and a few screw pot steel cases for the sphere magnets, a wind up alarm clock for my spring motor, and an electric fly swatter for a hobby project I actually do want to build, but more on that later...

[One More Tune] - 31:18

For One More Tune, we close out with 100 Times - Soapbox Army out of NYC. Part indie pop band, part rock band, part whatever-strikes-their-damn-fancy band, the NYC based collective has released 2 LPs (2009's self-titled and 2012's Reactor) and 1 EP (2014's Maps). Nice.

[song] - 31:48

Well Ok...

[Closing] - 35:14

Hey, this show is a 1223studios joint.

Show files are at iTunes, Internet Archive, Stitcher, Tunein, Listen Notes, Podknife and Mixcloud. Episode notes are on the podpages, and you can download the MP3 directly.

If you like the show, tell your friends, and, you know why Republicans in office always act like they'll never be voted out and Democrats always tiptoe around like they'll never survive the next election - it's the goddamn corporate media, the unofficial branch of the government, the mean girls greek chorus calling the tune they all dance to. They don't tell you what to think, but what to think about...

Show themes "Rocket Power" & "Spy Glass" by NY musician and composer Kevin MacLeod. Some additional audio from freesound.org.

Next episode is set for Friday. Dec. 7th.

I'm Larry, trying hard to stay chill at my garrett in the Mission, and this is Magnetofunky, from San Francisco, where we go through, not into, the darkness.
