Dog Days³ Episode Transcript. Length - 36:32 Magnetofunky No. 169. It's Friday, August 21st, 2020. [intro theme] Hey. Larry here. This time out the show is just sweating through the dog days of ennui while noting each time the lights flickered... Anyway, the music is all new eclectic tunes, opening with Shaddow... [song] - 00:48 Ok, that was Bitcoin Billionaire - Shaddow out of Arlington, TX. And yeah, this up-with-cryptocurrency number was produced by Tre 8 in 2017, it comes with a cool contest, an opportunity for Shaddow’s fans all around the world to join in and record a dance video to the song and post it on Tiktok, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or any other social media platform that's still available, with the tag #BitcoinBillionaireChallenge. The contest runs all the way until September, 20th, 2020. The winner will get $50 worth of Bitcoin sent to their phone bitcoin wallet. Nice... This is a laid back (and often explicit - you bet your ass) weekly (yeah right) international podzine and personal journal of extremely eclectic music and progressive politics, with a focus on energy independence for the 99%. My podpage is 1223studios.com/mfunky.h. The Twitter is @Magnetofunky. [Grid Theory] - 05:47 Pyrocumulus Ok, In Grid Theory, but not really... It's Dog Days cubed in Cali it's now fire season with over 300 fires fueled by the heat and high wind, and Pyrocumulus, or fire clouds, which come with its own dry lightning. The pandemic has also cut down on the numbers of slave labo- I mean, prison labor volunteer firefighters. With added rolling blackouts, some people have had to choose between running the air conditioner or leaving the windows open and breathing in the toxic cocktail of smoke, on top of continuing to deal with assholes refusing to mask up and be part of the solution. And, Lake Tahoe just confirmed a case of plague this week. Yes, the Bubonic Plague. I haven't gone outside at all this week, spent too much time watching TV, in fact----[bell] Ok, I have a word on a show that shouldn't be rebooted, in a bit... [Back To The Stage] - 07:26 Ok, Back to The Stage, continuing the eclectic new music set with DANGER, the Latest submission from the Stone Mountain GA artist and producer KGizzle. Actually seeing some danger lately cause of the huge monument to proud slave owners. It's followed by All I Ever Know, the new darkwave single by Amsterdam-based band CLAN OF XYMOX from the album Spider On The Wall, on Metropolis Records... [songs] - 08:01; 10:58 [Second set] All right, second set opens with a piece off a new release of re-imagined versions of Seattle industrial darkwave group God Module's most recent album The Unsound. The piece is Grey Forces, the first of two remixes on the album, this one the BABY MAGICK stryker roll out REMIX. And wrapping up with a fresh tune from Sydney punk outfit C.O.F.F.I.N (asin Children of Finland Fighting in Norway). A few shows back I featured Above The Law from 2012 and they said check out our new stuff, so here's a 2020 number, Fast Love... [songs] - 15:56; 18:41 ["Geeknotes"] - 22:16 Geeknotes: Zoom Convention... Hey, Geeknotes! Ok, instead of wasting time on President Shithole (who should see an orange jumpsuit gaining on him every time he looks in the mirror), I have more praise than brickbats for the Zoom-ified Democratic Nat'l Convention, even though the first two days were glaring in the Republicans showcased over the Democrats dissed, Wed. and Thur. were excellent, not one highlight speech by a nominator or nominatee was boilerplate or a bland list of policies, they were all gut-level, yet elegant, and an acknowledgement that the next two months, the next four years are gonna be a hard, dirty slog which may well include a bloody guerilla war fighting gangs of fired bent-badge and Border Patrol bullies, along with the already active Lone Wolf Battalion. We'll see how bad it gets between Election Day and Pres. Biden's Inauguration. You think I'm kidding... Anyway, I got one event to plug - Nationwide Protest - Save the Post Office from Trump, Sat. 2/22, 11AM - 1PM, at your local post office. Trump has vowed to block any and all legislation funding the USPS. Under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, mail boxes have been disappearing, mail sorting machines dismantled, the schedules of postal carriers cut back, and more. The USPS is essential for safe voting in the November election during the COVID-19 pandemic that has already taken 170,000 American lives. It is also a lifeline for veterans, the elderly, the disabled & immunocompromised, and others who receive their prescription medications and Social Security checks through the mail. Bring your "Save the Post Office from Trump" sign and represent! Supported by: MoveOn Indivisible SEIU NAACP RuralOrganizing.org Working Families Party Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights Anyway, for the duration, If you have promos, pluggers, gig info, an art opening, etc, send me an email and I may add it to my Twitter feed if possible. The address is [email protected]... ------... If you have promos, pluggers, gig info, an art opening, etc, send me an email. The address is [email protected]. And bands, artists and poets - download links, no attachments, please, and no promises... [Grid Practice] - 25:56 Don't Reboot Babylon 5 Ok, In Grid Practice, As I'm sorting through and reforming my studio setup, the Covid doldrums had me escaping into too much damn TV, where a number of Sci-Fi YouTubers have pondered whether or not to reboot the damn good show Babylon 5. I was a big fan back when we had multiple Star Trek shows to watch and you needed a VCR and plenty of blank tapes to rewatch favorite episodes. Anyway, I was all for a reboot just to update the special effects, but I hadn't watched any of the episodes in 20 years, so I sat down and binged the entire 5 year run, from the uneven pilot 'The Gathering' which I'd never seen, straight through, and after revisiting the show from the perspective of almost 30 years, my take is that the show still holds up, but it shouldn't be rebooted. In the first place, the fanboys would immediately scream about the inevitable 21st Century changes in the story which of course refers to the world building infrastructure of the show, which is a product of the gloriously, and explicitly default Eurocentric frame of reference of the creator, JMS. A 21st Cen. cultural framework will have a hip hop soundtrack in it, will have non-European mythological references to ship names, characters, deities, you'd likely have black Centauri, or explicity white Centauri and explicitly black Narn, etc, etc. You might as well reconn the entire thing. So no, I'd rather you create an entirely different concept of a diplomatic crossroads in space that has it's own 21st Cen. framework and doesn't reference Babylon 5 at all, not even loosely based. Instead of a black version, give me an original black vision that tells the same stories in a 5 year arc, where hip hop would be 300-yr-old classical music, not contemporary. That I would watch... [One More Tune] - 28:52 Ok, for this week's One More Tune, we close out with a tune to decompress - Have Heart, Will Travel - The Adelaidean, Australian ambient/experimental composer and bestselling author Sean Williams, who's been crafting soundscapes for over three decades. This is his debut release on Projekt Records. Enjoy... [song] - 29:22 Well, OK. [Closing] - 34:45 Hey, this show is a 1223studios joint. I'm on almost all the popular podcast platforms, the latest being Google Podcasts and iHeartRadio. Show notes are on the podpage. Send email to [email protected]. If you like the show, tell your friends, and, I think it's past time for us to call in NATO peacekeepers, not just observers, to counter the red hat goon squads Pineapple Pinochet will send to intimidate voters on Election Day, and unleash on blue states between Thanksgiving and New Year's. You still think I'm kidding... Show themes "Rocket Power" & "Spy Glass" by NY musician and composer Kevin MacLeod. Some additional audio from freesound.org. Next episode is set for Friday, Sept. 4th, a rare Sept. Fri. before Labor Day. I'm Larry, trying hard to stay chill at my garrett in the Mission, and this is Magnetofunky, from San Francisco, where we go through, not into, the darkness. |
