Half-Assed And Ham-Fisted

Episode Transcript. Length - 41:52

Image: Fire intentionally set inside ballot box in Baldwin Park...

Magnetofunky No. 172. It's Saturay, October 24th, 2020.

[intro theme]

Hey. Larry here. It's been a month since the last episode, I've done the pollworker training, already voted, and enjoyed last night watching ST Discovery instead of the last Pres. debate which was a more sedate but still lie-infested spectacle from P-Grabby. Anyway, we're less than two weeks away from the end of this sorry chapter in the American Experience (with the expected half-assed and ham-fisted actions like alleged red hats setting ballot drop boxes on fire) and the beginning of the next - the perilous transition if/when Biden wins with enough margin to keep it out of the courts.

Anyway, I have a few minor updates on the lab and the walkabout project, but mostly fresh new beats that have come in from my usual sources, like this new single from London-based alt-pop/electronic artist SALT ASHES...

[song] - 01:39

Ok, Brighton-based Salt Ashes burst into the dance music scene in 2016, renowned for her signature dark songs and melodies with a zeitgeist club sound, many of which were inspired by Giorgio Moroder’s blend of disco and epic dark atmospheres. Nice video too...

This is a laid back (and often explicit - you bet your ass) weekly international podzine of extremely eclectic music and progressive politics, with a focus on energy independence for the 99%. My podpage is 1223studios.com/mfunky.h. The Twitter is @Magnetofunky.

[Grid Theory] - 05:42

Chinese NiMH's Are Crap

Ok, In Grid Theory, An actual observation from the lab...

It's been a few years since I bought that big stash of Chinese NiMH AA batteries (I believe after I gave up on making those crystal cell batteries, which turned out no better than emergency bleach batteries). These things are supposed to be good for at least 2 - 3 years under normal use, and that the more you use them the longer they should last, but of the units I've actually put in regular rotation, a solid third of them have crapped out, gone completely flatline within 18 mo., didn't matter if they were used in the emergency phone charger banks, the electric shaver I got from Walgreens, or the most common use, in my wireless mouse, 1 out of 4 of these no-name 3000mAh things will come off a recharge cycle completely dead within 6 - 7 mo. of use.

It has nothing to do with the charger either: I use an old school Sunpak Rapid Charger that takes 7 hrs. to charge them and doesn't overcharge them, and I check them after each cycle with a battery meter I bought just to keep track. Very disappointed.

When I go on the road I've decided to keep a half dozen single use alkiline AAs and a few AAAs for emergencies, and any new NiMH's I get will be brand name, like the 4 Rayovac AAAs I got like 2 years ago that are going just fine. I have about a dozen that haven't been used yet, so my Bronze Age power is ok, but definitely no more Chinese batteries---[bell]

Ok, non-lab items in a bit...

[Back To The Stage] - 08:19

Ok, Back to The Stage, continuing the set of fresh beats that don't come anywhere near Halloween with one exception (cause really, we've been in horror territory since friggin St. Patrick's Day). Anyway, we open with WA5QWR by previously featured SoCal indie group Handtruck, the lead-off tunes from their new album Electric. The Mountain, released a few days after the last episode dropped..

[song] - 08:51

Ok, next tune is Heresey - Renard, synthpop group from Hamburg, Germany, the new project of Markus Reinhardt, the founder of Echo Award-winning, Gold & Platinum-selling group Wolfsheim. This is from the debut album WAKING UP IN A DIFFERENT WORLD...

[song] - 12:17

Ok, here's another number from Stone Mountain GA artist and producer KGizzle, called On IT, and you know, the cat sends me a lot of stuff, and even though I don't give them all a spin, I dig his diligence...

[song] - 15:50

Ok, next tune is Rattle In Your Chest - TECHNOPHOBIA, Washington, DC's dark pop duo of Katie and Stephen Petix, the team behind the curtain of both the music and Working Order Records; a growing nonprofit record label that helps raise awareness for charities in the DC area. This new single is the first new material since their acclaimed 2016 album “Flicker Out,” and from the album “Some of Us Are Looking at the Stars” dropping on December 4th...

[song] - 19:41

Ok, we're wrapping the set with Rock n Roll Refugee - PIG, the alternative electronic industrial rock post-punk outfit in London. The new single is from the album "Pain Is God," set for release on November 20th...

[song] - 24:24

["Geeknotes"] - 28:52

Geeknotes: The Other Worst Outcome...

Hey, Geeknotes!

Ok, It's all about the election season coming to a head with hopefully, as many people as possible voting before Nov. 3rd to cut down on the long lines of the actual day, and because it actually help to blunt theeffect of the increasingly desperately half-assed and ham-fisted voter intimidation and suppression tactics from the red hats, and the ongoing 'both sides' BS the corp. media is still pushing, cause a close horse race that pretends misinformation is just jockeying for position is good for ratings. And BTW, CNN, MSNBC and the Nazi Channel can all kiss my black ass in advance for chomping at the bit to call the election that night with too votes not counted, not out of fear of Mango Mussolini (cause we already know he'll declare total victory or total fraud that night), but because y'all get better Nielsen ratings than waiting until Nov. 5th or 6th. It's not like any of you millionaire news readers will lose anything other than stock options if the country slides to total fascism...

So, considering the aftermath post election week, the other worst case scenario if Pres. shithole becomes the lame duck we all hope for, is not that he keeps his promise to unleash a Nazi coup, but, following historical precedent, he decides to not wait until he completely loses power and gets hauled into the first of many courtroom proceedings, and pulls a fast getaway with his grifter family the way W. spirited Osama Bin Ladin's relatives out of the country after 9/11 - as in, they all abandon the White House and immediately flee on private jets to Russia, Saudi Arabia or China, all countries with no extradition treaty with the US. It wouldn't really cripple the gov't, whether or not Pence was left behind, as Nancy Pelosi could fill in very well until Jan., but it would be an ultimite FU to the GOP minions left behind with the stink of expired loyalty to Orange Queenie on their hands, whether or not Barret gets jammed into the SCOTUS.

And speaking of which, if the next Senate goes blue, why can't they just invalidate any rules broken and rescind any court packing appointments made by the previous one?

Lastly, daylight savings time ends Nov. 1st.

Ok, for the duration, If you have promos, pluggers, gig info, an art opening, etc, send me an email and I may add it to my Twitter feed if possible. The address is [email protected]...

[Grid Practice] - 33:13

Off-Road Walkabouting...

Ok, In Grid Practice,

Some items on the non-lab agenda...

It's been so long now since I reversed my type 2 diabetes by going on the keto diet and eliminating the need to take Metformin (summer 2016), that I'm no longer even pre-diabetic. This year I stopped carb counting, still doing Stevia no sugar and cut way back on bacon. Lately I been cooking a standard Depression-era 'poorman's meal' of frying an onion and a potato (yeah starch) for dinner, adding whole fruit (but no fruit juice), bringing back grits and even bread, with no observable backsliding on my personal checklist, and no increase in weight - I'm steady at a healthy 185 - 190lbs (healthy for my age and body type).

Anyway, I just came across a new-to-me nutrition philosophy that might work while I'm on the road, called G-BOMBS - greens, beans, onions, berries and seeds. With a little variation - like not giving up meat or eggs entirely - I could swing hard boiled eggs (and coffee) for breakfast, snacking on nuts and berries, big salads for lunch and canned chili dinners; a simple kitchen with a lot less cooking and cleanup...

And speaking of on the road, I'm really looking into apps like komoot and bike maps that focus on routes off the highway. For ex., pacific coast hwy 1 is on everybody's bike touring list, but I'm hauling a 2-wheeled trailer, and there are plenty places where it's a narrow two-lane with no safety rail on the ocean drop off side. Also, because I plan on mostly stealth camping, I'm gonna really rely on previously reported routes for good safe camp spots every 30 - 50 mi. for my conspicuous tarp condo tent. I'm even looking at short-term boondocking spots where I could stay for a day or so, work on a stone or work on a show - I still wanna do a podcast with some music and throw in some travel video.

Next big thing in preparing to walkabout will be my first shakeout trips - 1-2 day outings where I can test my gear with and without the cargo trailer, but I'll be able to concentrate on that after the election, cause a lot of rough crap for the next couple years will be apparent after then, fingers crossed...

[One More Tune] - 37:05

Ok, for this week's One More Tune, we close out with another cool tune from SoCal indie outfit Handtruck, WA5OEQ, which closes out their new album Electric. The Mountain. Nice headphones piece...

[song] - 37:26

Well, OK.

[Closing] - 40:31

Hey, this show is a 1223studios joint.

I'm on Internet Archive, Spotify, Tunein, Stitcher, Google Play, iTunes, PlayerFM, Listen Notes, Podknife and Mixcloud. Show notes are on the podpage. Send email to [email protected].

If you like the show, tell your friends, and, about Orange Queenie's secret Chinese bank account: maybe it was secret because Putin knows all about (and has control of) his account at Deutsche Bank...

Show themes "Rocket Power" & "Spy Glass" by NY musician and composer Kevin MacLeod. Some additional audio from freesound.org.

Next episode is set for whenever I have enough music and get fed up enough to spout off again, sometime before Thanksgiving.

I'm Larry, trying hard to stay chill at my garrett in the Mission, and this is Magnetofunky, from San Francisco, where we go through, not into, the darkness.
