Magnetofunky No. 177. It's Monday, January 25th, 2021.

[intro theme]

Yeah. Larry here, I'd love to say a new day has dawned and the demon lord is defeated, but down is not out, there's still 10-15 min. of monster movie left, so the Inauguration and first hopeful steps of President Biden and Vice President Harris can only be termed a soft reset of reality. There are still minions and lackeys demanding a mulligan on sedition as they plot a spiteful return and revival. Meanwhile, I knocked a few more items off the list for bike tour / walkabout gear, including my mobile power plant. The music this time out is another fine collection of submited tunes from some of my usual suspects...

[song] - 01:21

Yeah, that was Cheers to the View, another new cut by NYC founded, LA based band Mercury and the Architects. Nice..

This is a laid back (and often explicit - you bet your ass) international podzine and personal journal of extremely eclectic music and progressive politics, with a focus on energy independence for the 99%. My podpage is 1223studios.com/mfunky.h. The Twitter is @Magnetofunky.

[Grid Theory] - 04:42

A Few More Odds and Ends...

In Grid Theory,

The list of remaining gear to nail down is much shorter than before; if I actually score another stimulus check it'll knock a few months off the launch date. So, here's a few more non-bike odds and ends...

To handle laundry I decided to use a waterproof dry bag and if needed a soap dish with little rubber nodules for less than $10 instead of a $50 Scrubba bag. Laundry on the road is mostly t-shirts, socks, underwear, and the bag I got from Target is big enough to handle a pa. of jeans by itself. The other side of the laundry coin is what's being washed, meaning a switch from cotton to merino wool because it dries faster, stays warmer and wicks away sweat, something I knew from my Chicago bike messenger days where I wore wool socks in the winter because cotton kills. And I'm very glad they make merino boxer briefs cause I ain't wearing buttcrack tight bike shorts...

The alcohol stove needs a windscreen, so I made one using extra heavy duty aluminum foil that's big enough to provide elbow room for my biggest pot, just need a few small tent pegs to hold it down in a stiff wind, and one test video showed that even with no wind the screen cuts cook time and saves fuel...

Another item on the remaining list is bug netting, as in no see ums not just mosquitoes out here on the coast. Netting big enough for a full size bivy sack is expensive, but I already have a very cheap alternative I saw a couple other video campers using - a sheer window curtain. Some time after I moved into this SRO the bldg. super had a pair of leftover black curtains, but I never got the curtain rods and installed them myself cause by then I didn't want them covered in stone dust. One is 84 x 52", enough to enclose my DIY bivy sack. Anyway, I can tape it up bivy style with a tarp bottom and go with either a drawstring, velcro or a zipper opening, but still it's another solution for almost 1/10 the cost ---[bell]

Ok, the remaining power plant gear in a bit...

[Back To The Stage] - 08:04

Ok, Back to The Stage, continuing the set I'm calling 'we ain't outta the woods yet.'

First up it's Purge, from legendary industrial act Front Line Assembly, from the new album, Mechanical Soul. Then it's The Cleanse, an edgier than usual piece by KGizzle down in Stone Mountain GA...

[songs] - 08:32; 13:51

[Second Set] - 17:42

Ok, the final pair opens with Up To The Flames - Ludovico Technique, a goth tinged metal opus and the second single released from their forthcoming full-length album "Haunted People."

And we wrap with Extrajudicial, a short taste of industrial dark techno, synthpop and raw machine recordings by Terminal, AKA Thomas Mark Anthony, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Hailing from Pretoria, South Africa and long-time resident of Canada, a lifelong anti-apartheid and civil rights activist. His album, "Blacken the Skies," will drop on February 5th from Metropolis Records...

[songs] - 18:37; 22:37

["Geeknotes"] - 24:07

Geeknotes: Depressurize...

Hey, Geeknotes!

Ok, this is the first show of the Biden Administration, and even though there's plenty of Impeachment dumpster fire from he-who-I-refuse-to-mention, I'm just gonna hit a few other select hot messes and move on:

Why do so many right wing seditionists need a gun on Capitol Hill - has there been a sudden rash of muggings on the House floor? Can the squad start packing as well in self defense?

It's finally time to fix the filibuster by getting rid of the 1970 rule change that allowed theoretical debate insteaad of what it should be, the Jimmy Stewart Mr. Smith Goes to Washington actual physical debate style. If the GOP won't agree to that, fucking kill the filibuster completely, period.

The 'recall Gavin Newsome' movement in Cali can kiss my ass. There ain't a single Republican out here I trust with the office, I don't care what screwups Gavin has committed, the state GOP would intentionally make things worse...

Since Biden had to start vaccine distribution virtually from scratch, Chuck Todd can also kiss my ass with his '100M by 100 days or total failure' decree...

As far as the vaccine schedule, as I'm in the 1C group, I probably won't get a shot until 4/30 - Day 100 of Biden's term...

And on a personal note, I decided to re-establish a presence on FB for when I plan to go walkabout later on this year. I was serious when I deleted, not deactivated my accounts in Nov. 2019 - I was done with Z-Dog's BS. I downloaded my data and can always repost whatever I like, but I didn't want them continuing to track and add onto a deactivated account. Now, however, I have a use for the platform. I can post up podcast episodes without the irritating Twitter character limit, and when I'm on the road there will be times I want to post pics or a short video in real time so a select few somebodies will know where I am just in case. I'm guessing that's cheaper than a 911 satellite tracker.

And, for the duration, If you have promos, pluggers, gig info, an art opening, etc, send me an email and I may add it to my Twitter feed if possible. The address is [email protected]...

[Grid Practice] - 28:38

Solar Set...

Ok, In Grid Practice,

The last big items on my list were the portable solar panel and house batteries making up my power plant.

The thing I was waiting to do before putting out this episode (aside from the start of Biden's presidency) was a run test of my solar set, but getting the batteries was another big hassle.

I ordered the solar panel and the batteries on the same day, which happened to be Jan. 6th. The solar kit arrived three days later, but I had no end of crappy customer service from Apex, who didn't send a confirmation of sale until I asked, never sent a shipping number so I could track it (and didn't provide it till I sent one last customer service complaint on the 21st, the day it was delivered), and I'm guessing the crappy service is because the company is in N. Carolina and the order came from San Francisco. My next big battery purchase will be local, for sure...

Anyway,

I lost a full week of pleasant sunny days whaile waiting, and showers are forecast for the next week or so - so much for optimal conditions, but that's life. Next week I'll be looking to catch a 3 hr window around noon to hustle over to the nearest park, find a dry spot and record the run test...

[One More Tune] - 30:41

Ok, for this week's One More Tune, we close out with WATER WOOD AND STONE, the latest exclusive track sent in by Audionautix, AKA Jason Shaw, Composer Producer Engineer out of Pittsburg. Nice...

[song] - 31:00

Well, OK.

[Closing] - 33:50

Hey, this show is a 1223studios joint.

I'm on almost all the popular podcast platforms, the latest being Acast. Show notes are on the podpage. Send email to [email protected]; Send reviews to ratethispodcast.com/mfunky

If you like the show, tell your friends, and, If the Democrats were the Communist Socialist Marxist boogeymen the GOP constantly whine they are, there'd be 147 red hat Congresscritters and 4 or 5 seditionist Senators missing in action, and all those Jan. 6th domestic terrorists who got arrested would be disappeared, not released on bail and sent home to mama for a stern talking to. Snowflakes...

Show themes "Rocket Power" & "Spy Glass" by NY musician and composer Kevin MacLeod. Some additional audio from freesound.org.

Next episode is set for when I have enough music and stuff to rant about, let's say early Feb...

I'm Larry, trying hard to stay chill at my garrett in the Mission, and this is Magnetofunky, from San Francisco, where we go through, not into, the darkness.
