Camp Detour Episode Transcript. Length - 44:12 Magnetofunky No. 196. It's Monday, December 13th, 2021. [intro theme] Yeah. Larry here. I'm all set to do some riding, take a sample travel video and do my first overnighter with fingers crossed it won't be a rain day. I even started on a solution to address the casual bike thief scenario, but turns out I have to detour through a dental visit. Anyway, the music is a mix of new tunes submitted and curated, and none of them are seasonal cause it sure as hell don't feel like happy holidays... [song] - 01:17 Ok, that was Sex, an Avant-Garde Ambient Musical Theater piece by composer Victoria Darian for the plastic theater 19|84, based on the work of J. Orwell for the "Homeless Theater" (Veliky Novgorod-Saint Petersburg). It's also a collaboration with Russian electronic producer Alexei Kalinkin, and was uploaded to the FMA in late October... This is a laid back (and often explicit - you bet your ass) underground international personal journal of extremely eclectic music and progressive politics, with a focus on mobile energy independence and creative West Coast wanderlust. My podpage is 1223studios.com/mfunky.h. The Twitter is @Magnetofunky, and while I have a FB account up, the page is /larry.winfield.967. [Grid Theory] - 08:13 Tooth Distraction In Grid Theory, Ok, briefly... With my getting the camera rig setup and working out the shaky video problem (see the 'Panhandle Clip' video on my YouTube channel), I could finally see about scheduling an overnighter, so I called up the three closest campsites to get some info. Previous bikepackers mentioned rolling up to the state park offices and just paying for a spot right then, but there's a new online system, Reserve California, that may or may not include Hike or Bike sites, so I called up Angel Island, China Camp and Half Moon Bay State Parks to check, and yeah, they all said you gotta do it online now, even if you roll into the camp first. For example, the hike-in sites at Half Moon Bay were exempted from online reservation a month or so ago, but not now. Each state park had Tent or Tent-Only sites available, and the hike-ins were no longer $10, now $30-35/night. I was looking at a spot on Angel Island with a view of the East Bay for right before Xmas, but then one of my back teeth started telling me it wouldn't wait until next year, meaning the diy stimulus funds I was diverting for camp has to go to the dentist, cause Medicare don't fully cover dental or vision. So I ran through the state's online health resources, found a dentist and made an appt. for later on this week, and I'll try Angel Island again next month---[bell] Ok, the new security setup for the cargo trailer in a bit... [Back To The Stage] - 10:28 Ok, Back to The Stage, continuing with twp short sets of new tunes submitted and found. First up we have Control by Electronic darkwave duo BEAUTIFUL MACHINES from their forthcoming album Singularity, inspired by Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. Then it's Ladybread, an indie rock quintet from New York City, with their new single Violence! They're working on a full album hoping for a March 2022 release, and BTW, they have a show on Friday (12/17) at the world famous venue Arlene's Grocery. They're on at 10pm. [songs] - 11:15; 17:35 [Second Set] - 21:13 Ok, second set opens with Anhedonia, an experimental piece by the previously featured outfit Exempt From Gravity, a self-indulgent endeavour who persistently and consciously performs instrumental music. Cool. Found them at Unsigned Band Web... And wrapping up with Porcelain - Principe Valiente, a Swedish post-punk band, from their forthcoming album "Barricades," set to drop on March 18th, 2022 on Metropolis Records. [songs] - 21:55; 23:11 ["Geeknotes"] - 27:44 Geeknotes: Unfinished Business Hey, Geeknotes! Ok, this is the time of year when the TV is a mix of Xmas shows and 12-month recaps of highlights and disasters, social, political, etc. But just like last year, a lot of us ain't feeling the holidays at all, for many reasons besides the pandemic that's sustained by the agressively unvaxxed (but that's a big one), but an unspoken reason has to be all the unfinished business that hangs in the air, the political consequences for treason that keep being put off with empty promises of comeuppence, promises of justice for publicly funded death squads that seems to make up a solid 20% of all the LEO in the country, promises of real jail time for boys-will-be-boys brownshirts running loose - like the gangs of assholes from out of town who come to liberal enclaves like my street and set off fireworks that sound like AR-15s almost every weekend at bedtime. The funk of 2020 will still linger as the anniversary of Jan. 6th comes around, as we approach a million COVID dead, as we expect center-right moderates to handle fascists who are both funded by the same damn aristocrats, as accurate history is becoming a dirty word (for ex., accurate history would recount just how close this country came to siding with Hitler and Mussolini back in the day). As the year end retrospectives are presented like lazy school reports between Xmas commercials, the miasma persists. Yeah, seasons greetings... [Grid Practice] - 30:43 The Casual Theft-Proof Trailer Ok, In Grid Practice, Ok, back to the cargo frame and hopefully the way to deal with the persistent travel nightmare of my stuff being pilfered while I'm inside a small store or gas station restroom. Say the bike is locked down and I can't take the trailer with me. I could gamble by leaving all the gear on the bike and trailer and have a car alarm on it, but that wouldn't stop an opportunistic thief from just grabbing any of the exposed gear on the middle or top shelves in just a few minutes. So I looked at stainless steel backpack nets, security screens, I even considered making a security net out of steel cables. Then I went back to heavy duty plastic storage and shipping containers, looking for something lockable with an integrated lid. It took a while but I finally found the right container with the right dimensions. Global Industrial sells a tapered container that's 27x17" on top and 12-1/2" high. A perfect fit for the middle shelf, 2.5 cu. ft. of space, and with added coupling nuts and 6" rod extensions, the solar panel top rail will sit just high enough to allow the 10" hinged lids to open under it. That also eliminates the top shelf. The few top shelf items - camp chair, camp table, studio bag, tent poles - are still exposed, so they can go into a big duffle bag that's easy to hold down with bungees or a cargo net, but after many previous headaches with carrying duffels, I picked a rolling bag after much window shopping. It's 36x15.5x15.5" and doesn't have a drop bottom that reduces the inside length. It should arrive the day this episode comes out. This changes the scenario. On the road, the bag would be less than half full strapped down, but if I'm looking to make a pit stop, I can pull over beforehand, stash the handlebar harness, tarp bags and the trunk bag in the duffel, the folded up solar panel too, then lock up the bike and trailer at the stop, set the car alarm and take the roller with me. The container will be bolted or glued to the middle shelf and if I have a length of case hardened pewag square chain locked around it, that should discourage any casual 5-10 min. thief. That leaves the 5 gal. buckets exposed, but here's where that steel backpack net comes in. It's called Pacsafe, and the 55L size will easily fit a 19L bucket. A cable running through the trailer wheels can include the net. If I'm at a supermarket, fill up the duffel and take the trailer - that's what the extra wheels are for... So far I got the container, a new cargo net, the rolling duffel bag on the way, and my 6ft 8mm cable and a big Master lock, so I'm looking at about 5-6ft of 3/8" or 10mm Pewag chain, and the 55L Pacsafe bag. And a bike alarm. Even with my diy stimulus, that's gonna set the walkabout date back to Spring. Oh well, it'll be after the rainy season, and it shouldn't stop a few overnighters... [One More Tune] - 35:08 Ok, for this week's One More Tune, we close out with Our Little Hearts Like Saturn, an Experimental, Sound Collage, Gospel number by Studio Noir, AKA Producer Eddie Palmer, from his eponymous 2015 album found at the FMA... [song] - 35:32 [Music Bed] - 41:19 The music bed is Dawn - theAdelaidean & deepspace, from ANTIGRAVITY, their second collaboration of 2021, released Nov. 30th by Projekt Records. theAdelaidean has been creating music since the 1980s, and in his other life, he is #1 bestselling author Sean Williams and teaches creative writing at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia. deepspace is award-winning ambient musician Mirko Ruckels from Brisbane, Australia, with a discography of 12 releases. Send email to [email protected]. If you like the show, tell your friends, and, A recent trend on YouTube is a person driving through a Democratic Party-governed city at night, showing the sidewalks clogged by homeless tents, talking about rampant crime, bemoaning the clean streets of 'the good old days,' implying that GOP rule would fix everything. One video you'll never see will be a black driver riding through a red state sundown town in the daytime, talking about the violent history behind all those postcard-pretty streets and town squares, or interviewing the descendants of families burned out of their homes, or pointing out the lynching trees in town. I won't hold my breath... Show themes "Rocket Power" & "Spy Glass" by NY musician and composer Kevin MacLeod. Some additional audio from freesound.org. Next episode will be Dec. 27th, after Xmas... I'm Larry, trying hard to stay chill at my garrett in the Mission, and this is Magnetofunky, from San Francisco, where we are still slogging through, but no longer into, the darkness. |
