Damn Right It's A Blue Wave Episode Transcript. Length - 41:29 Magnetofunky No. 97. It's Saturday, November 10th, 2018. [intro theme] Hey. Larry here, in the pursuit of grid power to the people. This week the Election Day results are still coming in, and your damn right a blue wave thundered through, I had a front row seat as a poll worker, and the drama ain't over yet, but it meant only a little work done at Mfunky Labs. The music this week is all new, all submitted indie tunes from east, west, south and north... [song] - 01:01 Ok, that was Walk On Fire - Indarra, a project by vocalist Sue Hutton (Rhea's Obsession) with a mandala of players who conjure dreamscapes, songs of the earth & sky, the past & of today. This is the title cut from the new album sent in by Toronto-based Metropolis Records. This is a laid back (and often explicit - you bet your ass) weekly international podzine of extremely eclectic music and progressive politics, with a focus on energy independence for the 99%. My podpages are 1223studios.com/mfunky.h and facebook.com/1223Studios. [Grid Theory] - 05:52 Half Steps Ok, In Grid Theory, I'm keeping it short cause there wasn't a lot done in the lab this week - I was a poll worker on Tuesday, which was a long hard day I'm still recovering from, but, I did manage to work up a mount for the battery banks on the Benitez model 1 project board to keep everything as one unit. I would have the wiring done by now, but I discovered that 16 gauge wire is too damn big for my knife switches so 18 gauge is what I gotta get after all. Meanwhile, the ink for my printer came in (yeah, all the local stores stopped carrying the $25 color cartridge in favor of the $50 suckers; one more thing ya gotta buy online). So now I've printed out the relevant Benitez patents and the diagrams to mark up. Anyway, the last hurdle in the Benitez build concerned those blocking diodes in the Lindemann video that had heat sinks. I asked the guy at the Berkeley shop about those components, called stud diodes, and he said my 1N4007 power diodes are plenty for the voltages I'm dealing with, and I bet they're for that attraction motor, so no need to sweat that bit of mishigoss... Meanwhile, for the Benitez model 7 build, I did pick up a triple tap transformer that can step up 24V to 230V--- [bell] Ok, coming back with the booster box mod... [Back To The Stage] - 08:06 Ok, Back to The Stage, continuing the in-through-the-transom set with I Stir It Up-2 - K Gizzle, AKA Kevin Gadsen, Musician Producer Performer out of Stone Mountain GA who hasn't made the stage in a while, but I liked this brand new piece... [song] - 08:29 11:38 After that, we have one more number from the band Handtruck (AKA Clinton Kirby (gtr), Stephen Thomas (dr)), No Money For Jack... [song] 14:44 Ok, next up we have Drowning - Stereoship, a NYC based rock band all in their early 20's. That's Vocals - Dustin Graziano Guitar - John Curran Guitar - Juan De La Luz Bass - John Barret Drums - Payton Gutierrez This single is from their EP released October 16th... [song] 18:48 All right, we wrap the set with one more tune by Indarra, Two Separate Worlds. BTW, that mandala of players: Producer/instrumentalists Kevin Laliberte, Chris Gartner, percussionist Deb Sinha, tabla Ed Hanley, Heiki and Scott M2 on synths. [song] ["Geeknotes"] - 24:15 Geeknotes: 11/11 - Science Film Festival @ Lawrence Hall of Science, Berkeley, 11/13 - Humanity in Artificial Intelligence @ World Affairs, SF, 11/14 - 40 Under 40 Young Women Professionals League Award Ceremony @ DuSable Museum of African American History, Chicago, 11/14 - Planning with Native Communities @ USC Sol Price School of Public Policy, LA Hey, Geeknotes! Today it's Saturday the 10th of November, And I repeat - to hell with the corporate media spin, this was a glorious big blue wave that's still crashing, and even though we didn't get everything, I'm good with taking back control of the House, and props to Stacy Abrams for not conceding the heavily suppressed Georgia Governor's race, and to Andrew Gillum in Florida, whose concession didn't take. So Paul LePage, Scott Walker, Kris Koback - kick rocks, pound sand, let the door knob hit you where the Koch Brothers bit you, and good luck with your new wingnut welfare gigs. And Nazi elf Jeff Sessions can get back to making them cookies... Meanwhile the Lame Duck-sponsored Lone Wolf Battalion ain't going nowhere, so every new member of said blue wave should have bodygaurds and bulletproof vests issued yesterday, because it's a long stretch to swearing in the next Congress... Meanwhile, as Justice Meat grinds a butt groove into his cushy leather seat at the SCROTUS, remember that Christine Blasey Ford and family are still getting death threats, can't resume her life and might as well be in witness protection, but that's old news, right... Meanwhile, why is the White House Press Corps still refusing to call a goddamn liar a goddamn liar? It ain't gonna happen, but I'd love to see them all march out to the gate surrounding the White House and pitch their precious press credentials over the fence and refuse to cover Orange Queenie's goddamn lies and his Nazi rallies and just report what his chewing gum and chicken wire dictatorship is doing under cover of gaslight. Anyway, the sky here is still hazy with smoke from 180 miles away, so let's run the dates: 11/10 - World Science Day, but also, day two of Kristallnacht... 11/11 - Veteran's Day, though I prefer Armistice Day, the O.G. designation. 11/11 - Science Film Festival, 11 AM – 1:30 PM, Lawrence Hall of Science, 1 Centennial Dr, Berkeley Join the Lawrence Hall of Science for their first-ever Science Film Festival featuring four popular science films (Hidden Figures, Contact, Jurassic Park, and Robot & Frank) and one new documentary (Inventing Tomorrow)! Each movie will be introduced by scientists who inspired and were inspired by it. Two showings for each film: 11:00 a.m. & 5:30 p.m. Ticket on sale now, click the podpage link for details... 11/12 - When we observe Veteran's Day - and some y'all start Xmas shopping... oh, it's also World Pneumonia Day. 11/13 - Humanity in Artificial Intelligence, 6:30 PM – 8 PM, World Affairs, 312 Sutter St, Ste 200, SF Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the way we live our lives. In technology, money, medicine, love and work, etc., however, it can also manipulate, and alienate populations. AI’s advanced form can obscure power and choice. “Solomon’s Code: Humanity in a World of Thinking Machines” a new book by Olaf Groth and Mark Nitzberg explores these issues and applies a new perspective on the use of artificial intelligence. 11/14 - 40 Under 40 Young Women Professionals League Award Ceremony, 6 PM – 9 PM CST, DuSable Museum of African American History, 740 E 56th Pl, Chicago Celebrating 40 Rising Young Women Leaders, including the OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT UNDER 40 HONOREE: Amara Enyia. YWPL is a philanthropic initiative for women ages 25-39. Their mission is to build a network of young professional women who support the holistic development of future leaders through the conduits of leadership development, service, philanthropy, and sisterhood. 11/14 - World Diabetes Day 11/14 - Planning with Native Communities, 6 PM – 8 PM, USC Sol Price School of Public Policy, 650 Childs Way, LA In light of Native American Heritage Month, the Associated Students of Planning and Development, Partnership for an Equitable Los Angeles, and USC's Native American Student Union invite you to engage in critical dialogue and celebrate the work of native organizations and individuals through our "Planning with Native Communities" event. The speakers will discuss key issues, offer counter narratives, and share resources to help better plan for, and honor the stories of, Native American communities in Los Angeles and the greater Southern California region. FREE Food & Admission! 11/15 - World Philosophy Day 11/16 - Int'l Day of Tolerance And a final production note: I've started turning the show scripts I write into episode transcripts, for now just last week and this week, but I'll slowly add them in to the most recent shows and the archive pages. I'm not convinced how much of an SEO bounce I'll get, but we'll see... If you have promos, pluggers, gig info, an art opening, etc, send me an email. The address is [email protected]. And bands, artists and poets - download links, no attachments, please, and no promises... [Grid Practice] - 32:46 Booster Box Cuts Ok, in Grid Practice... The booster box is coming along part 2 - I finished modding the mock up with the service ports cut out to give me the easiest access to all the components, leaving the question of whether to use velcro or snaps to keep everything secure while wearing it on a belt. The compartment for spare AA batteries looks ok, and since it does look like 6 AA's could fit, there might be enough space for 2 more between the booster battery clip and the closed service port. Nice, but we'll see after I actually build the thing. And after making a half-hour run to the local hardware store, I have my AC grounding outlet for the box, and enough 18 gauge wire to continue building... [One More Tune] - 34:09 For One More Tune, we close out with another number courtesy of Metropolis Records out of Toronto - Eye On You (album mix) - Front Line Assembly feat. Robert Görl (Gurl - yeah, I don't know how close that is with the umlaut). Anyway, the legendary Front Line Assembly is a Canadian electro-industrial band formed by Bill Leeb in 1986 after leaving Skinny Puppy; Robert Görl is a German musician, best known for his work with Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft - D.A.F., and for his solo recordings, particularly his work with Annie Lennox of Eurythmics. The song is taken from the album "Wake Up The Coma”, coming early 2019. I'm playing the album mix; there are also longer remixes from Terence Fixmer and Orphx, and when you dance to this one, you can imagine it going with the Brooks Brothers riot no. 2 going on in Florida trying to stop the vote counting... [song] - 35:47 Well Ok... [Closing] - 40:16 Hey, this show is a 1223studios joint. Show files are at iTunes, Internet Archive, Stitcher, Tunein, Listen Notes, Podknife and Mixcloud. Episode notes are on the podpages, and you can download the MP3 directly. If you like the show, tell your friends, and, the talking head memes for Dems over the next two years should go from 'pushback' to 'push forward' and don't say 'Resistance,' say 'Restoration.' It ain't that hard... Show themes "Rocket Power" & "Spy Glass" by NY musician and composer Kevin MacLeod. Some additional audio from freesound.org. Next episode is set for Friday Nov 16th. I'm Larry, trying hard to stay chill at my garrett in the Mission, and this is Magnetofunky, from San Francisco, where we go through, not into, the darkness. |
