Magnetofunky No. 99. It's Friday, November 23rd, 2018

[intro theme]

Hey. Larry here. This week as far too many people fight to buy crap they can't afford in between fighting with red hat relatives, the Benitez build is down to tying up loose ends. The music is all hot political buzz words, sparked by a submission from LA rockers Black Stardust, opening hot...

[song] - 00:56

Yeah, that was Revolution, the hot new single by Black Stardust, the Hard Rock Band Centered in Your Mind. And BTW, their next gigs are:

Wednesday, 28 November 2018
North Hollywood, CA, US
The Other Door

Saturday, 22 December 2018
Burbank, CA, US
The Park Bar and Grill

This is a laid back (and often explicit - you bet your ass) weekly international podzine of extremely eclectic music and progressive politics, with a focus on energy independence for the 99%. My podpages are 1223studios.com/mfunky.h and facebook.com/1223Studios.

[Grid Theory] - 04:17

Loose Ends

Ok, In Grid Theory,

Since it's a short week and I've been away from the lab in real life, I just worked on the Benitez, and I'll talk about the lab work later. I did have to go back over the Lindemann video to confirm the loose end that was the on/off switch that isn't indicated in the circuit but he did mention briefly that his goes between the reed switch and the transistor's collector. No matter what motor is used, that should stay the same.

The next loose end was fixed by adding an annex to the project board for the circuit and the motor, so I don't bump an elbow on the works while flipping the many switches. The last loose end was the actual mount for the motor, but I came up with a pvc version I can glue to the project board that will let me swap out the blender motor for a 24V RC toy or robot motor (if I can find one without having to go online). Luckily, I went for a walk in the Black Friday rain and ended up back at the local thrift store where I got the $20 blender and found a smoothie blender for only $6.

This appliance proved much harder to separate from the motor, but while cracking and cutting the plastic housing from around it, I saw that it's the same size motor. I'm not done freeing it from the housing (and that's where I'm stopping to produce the show), but this one won't be stripped - I'm turning to the videos that show how to run an AC motor on DC, with a capacitor in parallel, I think. And the attraction motor goes back to the hobby bin until I get more 30 gauge wire to build one from scratch--

[bell]

Ok, coming back with the Benitez build...

[Back To The Stage] - 07:14

Ok, Back to The Stage, Ok, Back to The Stage, continuing the leftover Turkey Talking Points with songs all curated at Reverbnation. First up it's In Cages - gods&guns, an Alternative / Rock / Metal outfit down in Brownwood, TX, created in the beginning of 2011. This buzz word evokes the concentration camp for brown children I was calling 'Baby Buchenwald,' but you might as well call it 'Abu Ghraib on the Rio Grande.' After that, it's Lone Wolf, an instrumental piece by Scarpaw's Blood Band, a Dance band in Thorn Hill, TN with No bio, and two dead FB links. The buzz word needs no explanation..

[songs] - 08:10; 11:12

[Second Set] - 15:06

Ok, second set open with Border - Wolf Dimension, a Rock / Blues / Alternative band out of Mississauga, ON, CA. But these ain’t no old time Blues. And we wrap up with a short sharp blast of pure Alternative / Punk - Rebellion - sXe over in Chatham, MA, a duo with no bio, no links, and no volume control. Nice...

[songs] - 15:44; 19:07

["Geeknotes"] - 20:02

Geeknotes: 11/25 - Anti-Gentrification Free Store @ Leimert Park Art Walk, LA, 11/29 - Marx's Capital Study Group @ DSA, SF, 11/29 - Close read - Decolonization is Not a Metaphor @ Moishe House Oakland, 11/30 - Voices From the Resistance @ Brava, SF...

Hey, Geeknotes!

Today it's Friday the 23rd of November,

And since it's a short holiday shopping week, and I'm letting the show do most of the political talking, I'll keep it brief. For example, after another day in which P-Grabby spews forth self-serving bullshit we're all supposed to harumph, at this point the standard reply to almost every Mount Twitler eruption should be a simple 'Yo Mama!'

And one more thing for future reference: among the handful of countries that don't have an extradition treaty with the US, two in particular are Mainland China, and, wait for it - Saudi Arabia, which might explain why Uncle Caligula ain't about to seriously condemn a solid business partner for the murder of Jamal Kashoggi. Put a pin in that for 2020, or sooner...

Anyway, let's run the dates:

11/25 - World Day to Eliminate Violence on Women

11/25 - Anti-Gentrification Free Store, 2 PM – 6 PM, Leimert Park Art Walk, 3333 43rd Place, LA

As always, the praxis behind the Free Store is solidarity, not charity. This means you can take what you need from the space and share what you no longer use without expecting something in return.

They're calling this Free Store "Solidarity Sunday," which stands in opposition to the consumeristic "Black Friday" and "Small Business Saturday." Cool.

11/29 - Marx's Capital Study Group, 6 PM – 8 PM, 350 Alabama St #9, SF

Hosted by Democratic Socialists of America: San Francisco, meeting #4

Marx’s Capital is the single most influential socialist text in the world, containing extraordinary insights about the dynamics of capitalism. This session will cover Part 2: Transformation of Money into Capital (chapters 4, 5 & 6). Please feel free to show up even if you haven't had a chance to do the reading. They'll summarize for you!

11/29 - World Solidarity Day with Palestinian People

11/29 - Close read - Decolonization is Not a Metaphor, 7 PM – 9 PM, Moishe House Oakland

"Decolonizing the Americas means all land is repatriated and all settlers become landless. It is incommensurable with the redistribution of Native land/life as common-wealth."

This now-classic essay from 2012 (by Eve Tuck and K. Wayne Yang) has significantly shifted the conversation about settler-colonialism and the relationship of indigenous people(s) to capitalism and white supremacy. Participants are free to read the essay ahead of time but it's not required: they'll be focusing the evening on a few key passages which will be provided the evening-of.

Moishe House Oakland has 6 steps leading up to the front door. We are half a mile from the nearest BART station and a quarter mile from several bus stops. Ya gotta message them on the FB to get the address...

11/30 - Voices From the Resistance, 7 PM – 8:30 PM, Brava, 2781 24th St, SF

Angela Davis in Conversation with Olga Talamante
Moderated by Chelis Lopez

A fundraiser for MAESTRAPEACE Book
and the Chicana Latina Foundation

Friday, November 30 at 7:00pm - 8:30pm

The event will also feature a musical set by the Oakland based repertory group Young Gifted and Black!

Right on!

If you have promos, pluggers, gig info, an art opening, etc, send me an email. The address is [email protected]. And bands, artists and poets - download links, no attachments, please, and no promises...

[Grid Practice] - 26:08

Benitez Build Annex

Ok, in Grid Practice...

The Benitez build is damn near done, now that the 1N4007 power diodes are installed, and I fixed all the knife switch connections by adding ring terminals because these switches are kinda flimsy on top of being exposed. The extra piece of wood for the annex gave me room to install the simple circuit for the motor, and with the pvc motor mount I'm definitely on third base. The only things remaining are magnets for the pulley wheel. I tried to adapt the broken ceramic magnet, but it just wouldn't cooperate, and the neodymium ring magnets are too small, so a couple disc magnets should work, if the Berkeley store has 'em. I'll also see what size capacitor I need to run the AC motor on DC. Meanwhile, the booster box will be next week's headache. Stay tuned...

[One More Tune] - 27:43

For One More Tune, we close out with a tune some of y'all already know - Antifa - 99 posse, an Electronica / Hip Hop / dub outfit out of Napoli It., active from 1991-2005, reformed in 2009. The lyrics of their songs often have a political and social background: they tell of the hardships caused by poverty, by the imagination, by the strength to express dissent. yeah the piece is in Italian, but I got translated lyrics on the FB page with the video, so you can sing along while doing the blue wave dance. Crank it!

[song] - 28:37

Well Ok...

[Closing] - 32:34

Hey, this show is a 1223studios joint.

Show files are at iTunes, Internet Archive, Stitcher, Tunein, Listen Notes, Podknife and Mixcloud. Episode notes are on the podpages, and you can download the MP3 directly.

If you like the show, tell your friends, and, in lieu of the 'War on Xmas' season that just kicked into gear, y'all better pray that the first group of aliens to publicly aproach us ain't a bunch of damn missionaries bearing gifts...

Show themes "Rocket Power" & "Spy Glass" by NY musician and composer Kevin MacLeod. Some additional audio from freesound.org.

Next episode is set for Friday, Nov 30th..

I'm Larry, trying hard to stay chill at my garrett in the Mission, and this is Magnetofunky, from San Francisco, where we go through, not into, the darkness.
